2022-03-18: Yo-Yo Safety

When it comes to using yo-yos, safety is an important consideration for both yourself and those around you. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

String Burns:

As a new yo-yoer, you may experience string burns, which occur when the string rubs against your skin quickly and causes friction. These burns can be caused by pulling on the string too hard or when the yo-yo snags and yanks on the string unexpectedly. With practice and experience, your skin will toughen up and you will experience fewer burns.

Yo-Yo Control:

It’s important to be aware of where your yo-yo is in relation to your surroundings, especially when you’re just starting out. Until you feel confident in your ability to perform tricks unconsciously, it’s best to avoid whipping the yo-yo around near expensive screens or windows.

Pets:

Keep in mind that small pets, such as cats, dogs, and ferrets, may see your yo-yo as a new toy and may launch themselves at it. If they have long hair, it could get caught in the axle or tangled in the string.

String Maintenance:

The string on a yo-yo is the most commonly replaced part, as it will eventually wear out and break. If you notice that your string is weakening around the slip knot or fraying, it’s time to replace it. Additionally, check the yo-yo end of the string for fraying, as this area comes into contact with the response area of the yo-yo and can wear out over time.

Knots:

If you experience a knot in your string, be careful when disassembling your yo-yo to remove it. If the string slips while reassembling the yo-yo, it can get caught between the hubs and the axle parts, potentially cutting the string.

Most of these tips are common sense, but it’s important to keep them in mind, especially when you’re new to the hobby.
